We had fun watching the 1989 action hit Road House. We did disagree on whether or not it is a good movie. I think my personal opinion is that it “was” a good movie in 89′ but, I don’t think it holds up today. Actions movies have evolved maybe more than any other genre. I think that is due to professional fighters and mass exposure to the UFC. In the days that Road House was shot we had several stars that may have been masters or trained in a specific martial art. With mainstream competitive fighting we now know these are fairly ineffective however entertaining and flashy to watch.

This Road House cast stars Patrick Swayze, Ben Gazzara, Sam Elliott, Kelly Lynch and Jeff Healey. Patrick and Sam’s careers speak for themselves with Patrick staring in things like Ghost, Point Break and Donnie Darko. Sam Elliott has played in pretty much everything that has a cowboy roll including the new Yellowstone series 1883. And then of course legendary blind blues guitar player Jeff Healey who plays the roll as the leader of the Double Deuce house band.

Does this movie hold up? I don’t think so, but that doesn’t mean I would tell you not to watch it. All in all it’s a blast despite it being pretty late 80’s cheesy. So grab some popcorn and get ready for some over dramatic acting, some hokey one liners and get yourself some giggles watching this classic.

The estimated budget for this United Artists film was $15 million with an estimated box office of $61.6 million and still plugging away with rentals and digital purchases. A lot of people saw it and many still love it. I certainly understand the attraction to this classic. Check out the IMDB Page for other information.
