On todays podcast we review the 1986 action flick Cobra by Sylvester Stallone. First off, I remembered having fond memories of this movie from when I was a wee lad. In 1986 I would have been 11. But probably the biggest thing I remembered was the car. a 1950 Mercury Monterey. So when we decided to review this movie I was excited because… cool car, Stallone, action. Boy did I mis-remember!

Turns out the car is about the only thing cool in the move. The movie released in May 86′ is basically about a murderous cult going on killing sprees in Los Angeles focusing on the weak until they focus their attention on Brigitte Nielsen after she witnesses them committing a murder. The first 15 minute supermarket hostage scene is loaded with cheesy one liners, like “You’re the disease and I’m the cure” or “Hey dirtbag, you’re a lousy shot. I don’t like lousy shots. You wasted a kid… for nothing. Now I think it’s time to waste you!” Or honestly my personal favorite…

“- Supermarket Killer: Get back! I got a bomb here! I’ll blow this whole place up!
– Lieutenant Marion ‘Cobra’ Cobretti: Go ahead. I don’t shop here.”

But after the first 15 minutes or so where they movie starts to take shape is where IMO where Cobra gets ugly. Cobra is viewed as this super major bad ass and it’s kind of hard to put your finger on why. He puts everyone in danger, breaks everything seems to make terrible decisions that just happen to work in his favor. Maybe this is how it worked in 1986. All in all this is not the worst of Sylvester Stallone. While he has a library of fantastic movies, this is not one of them.

But over all this movie is a really hard watch. I’m glad we watched it because we got a lot of giggles out of it. It’s a real stinker.

If you have it in you, watch the trailer below!
